Specific Learning Difficulties
Rushmoor has an excellent reputation for the work and the successes achieved with children with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD.) In our ISA Inspection in November 2006 it was noted that the Learning Support Department "makes outstanding provision for pupils who have learning difficulties." We have three Specialist Teachers, who all have post graduate qualifications in SpLD, and are on hand to assess, plan individual programmes and teach children with a variety of difficulties.
Children may require individual or small group tuition from a Specialist Teacher or sympathetic help and care within the classroom from our highly experienced Learning Support Assistants. Children are taught in a multi-sensory way using highly regarded programmes of study. Staff attend courses on a regular basis in order to keep up to date with the latest research and resources.
Some children arrive at Rushmoor School with difficulties that have already been identified, other children are assessed once they arrive following extensive screening and monitoring. Either way, we ensure that the earliest possible intervention occurs to enable the child to develop appropriate strategies for learning and ultimately to achieve their full potential.
Building Self Esteem
Building and maintaining self esteem is vital for children with Learning Difficulties. The Learning Support staff work very closely with class teachers, form tutors and specialist staff to ensure the well being of the individual child. Close links with parents also play a vital role in making a child feel secure and happy. Two to three times a term we hold a Parents' Group where strategies can be discussed and shared and regular speakers address issues of interest such as dyslexia etc.
'The school makes excellent arrangements for those pupils who require special educational provision. The high regard in which the parents hold the SEN department is well justified. It makes outstanding provision for pupils who have learning difficulties.'
